I entered the commercial sector with strategic alliances, says D-Black

Rapper D-Black has disclosed that, in his early years in the music business, he planned carefully to work with a few certain artists in order to break into the public.

D-Black revealed on his programme "Uncut" that he used to collaborate with musicians that not only had large fan bases but also sang in Twi and other regional languages.

The "Vera" hitmaker stated that this tactic helped dispel fans' misconceptions about him because many believed he wasn't Ghanaian, particularly because he rapped in English.

D-Black claimed to have more followers and to have more people listen to his tracks.

“Hiphop was not a commercial phenomenon; although some people performed it, the songs were not very popular.”My approach was to always perform a hip-hop song with a local singer singing in the dialect. In order to get his fans or the people of Ghana to listen to it, I would collaborate with Kwabena Kwabena on a song. D-Black claimed that his introduction to the commercial world came about as a result of those collaborations alone.

D-Black claimed that not many rappers were effectively pursuing hip-hop and breaking into the mainstream during the period of Hiplife's domination.

"There was nowhere to fit me in, so as soon as it happened for me, the Ghana Music Awards created Hiphop Song of the Year." I won that category as soon as it was introduced since you couldn't fit me in hiplife, and it went on from there, D-Black continued.
